Introduction to Print Making:
Course Description: Introduction to Monoprint, Linocut, Dry point and Collagraph print processes. This course is designed for beginners or those seeking a refresher in printmaking. Participants will also learn about designing & transferring an image to both lino and acetate, safe carving and mark-making techniques, registering a print and inking up correctly, before printing multiples of each design using a professional studio press or by hand (using a spoon or baren).
Course Content: The course will be divided into 2 blocks. The first block will concentrate on a different print process each week :
- Monoprint – a spontaneous painterly process that incorporates a number of different techniques such as additive, subtractive, texture, stencil, painterly and trace monoprints.
- Linocut – a relief, or block print process where an image is carved into a linoleum (lino) block and the remaining surface of the block is inked and printed.
- Dry point – from the intaglio family, in which an image is incised directly into an acetate sheet with a hard-pointed needle. The ink applied to the flat surface areas of the plate are wiped back, allowing the ink to gather where any cuts or marks are made.
- Collagraph – a highly tactile & adaptable printing technique, involving creating a plate from cardboard or thin wood, upon which a wide selection of different surface materials, fibers and shapes can be layered. Building these layers will result in a richly detailed and textured plate that will then be varnished, inked up and printed.
In the second block, the participants will be encouraged to further explore the techniques already learnt, to create their own personal prints.
