INTRODUCTION:
Art 1 offers an exciting introduction to professional art practice. It is suited to the mature student or to those who prefer supported learning without the pressures of CAO portfolio deadlines. Art and design projects will be delivered in a positive and creative environment. Students will learn to investigate experiment and create art with confidence and skill.
Creative thinking and personal expression are key elements of the course. Students will produce a comprehensive portfolio of work through a series of workshops, classes and individual tutorials. This course can lead to study in Art 2.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
- Applications welcome from with those with an interest or experience in creativity.
- Leaving certificate or equivalent required and mature students with no formal qualification can apply.
- Places will be offered based on an interview. Bring a sample of art, design or craft work to the interview.
DURATION:
This is a one-year course but on successful completion students may progress to Level 6 courses such as Art 2.

- QQI exam fees: €50*
- Facilities / Class Materials: €120

* Note: Students with medical cards are exempt from paying the QQI exam fee.
CERTIFICATION:
- QQI Level 5 in Art, Craft & Design (5M1984).
COURSE CONTENT:
Students will be examined in a minimum of 8 subjects. The following subjects may be offered:
Drawing - 5N1862
Drawing from observation is central to the course. Our students learn to observe and record from the world around them, thus developing creative thinking and concept building. Research through the use of sketchbook is also an important core element.
Painting - 5N1302
Painting is designed to develop the use and understanding of colour. We work one to one with the students to navigate the world of contemporary painting practice and help them to relate it to their own art process.
Combined Materials - 5N0764
This subject introduces the student to a wide variety of materials and techniques suitable for use in textiles, sculpture and painting.
Printmaking - 5N1373
Students will explore their creativity through a range of exciting printmaking techniques such as dry-point, mono-print, relief-print and more.
Design Skills - 5N0784
Students will begin to develop analytical and conceptual skills and will explore design ideas from the planning stage to execution, for both 2D and 3D outcomes.
Ceramics - 5N0759
Students will learn core ceramics techniques, coiling, slab building, clay modelling, glazing and wood firing.
Communications - 5N0690
In this subject students begin to build their personal profile as an artist, from compiling a CV to analysing and talking about their own work.
Work Experience - 5N1356
This subject helps students to place themselves in a professional work environment. This gives them real experience in their chosen field.

Our in-house gallery provides students with first-hand experience both in exhibiting and promoting their work to industry standard.
WORK PLACEMENT:
Group project will lead to an event such as an exhibition.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:
Past students now work in art centres, community art projects, art collectives and design studios.
