INTRODUCTION:

Progress from Radio and Podcasting 1 or complete as a stand-alone year to further your skills in Production. Develops advanced podcasting and radio techniques, allowing students to focus closely on researching, recording, script writing, producing and distributing podcast and/or radio content in specialized genres Practical experience is gained in the college’s licenced digital on-air radio station, Juice FM Cork. Broadcast presentation skills, radio podcasting techniques, news broadcasting, media, industry awareness, legal studies, communications, and documentary making form core components of the course. Students participate in the professional management structure for Juice Cork on FM, mobile and online radio output.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Successful completion of a QQI level 5 award.
  • For mature applicants appropriate experience in podcasting, Community Radio or other broadcast platforms will be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.
  • All applicants will be interviewed.

DURATION:

This is a one-year course.

FEES:

  • Student Services: €250
  • QQI exam fees: €80*
    Total: €330

* Note: Students with medical cards are exempt from paying the QQI exam fee.

COURSE CONTENT:

The following subjects may be offered:

Media Industry Awareness - 6N5505

This subject is designed to broaden the learner’s understanding of old and new media formats, specifically looking at production and postproduction values, audience theory and the regulation of new media.

Media Ethics & Legal Framework - 6N5453

This subject is intended to enable candidates to have an in depth awareness of the ethical and legal issues concerning the media. The subject is designed to prepare learners for working in the media and in journalist circles where they may already have some working knowledge of ethics and legislation that pertains to the media.

Radio News Broadcasting - 6N5454

This subject is designed to be taken in conjunction with the Radio Techniques subject where course work and assessment may be integrated. The subject is designed to provide learners with a knowledge and understanding of Radio News Broadcasting issues.

Radio Documentary Production - 6N5433

This subject is designed to give the candidate the range of skills required to work in the area of radio documentary production. The mode of tutoring and delivery is intended to encourage the candidate to manage and produce audio work to a high standard in a simulated workplace environment.

Broadcasting Presentation Skills - 6N5425

This subject is designed to give the candidate the range of skills required to present radio and television programmes to a professional standard. The mode of teaching and delivery is intended to encourage the candidate to manage and produce broadcast work to a high standard in a simulated workplace environment.

Radio Techniques - 6N5455

The subject is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the technologies and techniques that underpin modern radio broadcasting. Both practical and theoretical approaches will be used to deliver the subject.

Work Experience - 6N1946

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the relevant knowledge, skill and competence to participate in the workplace for a limited time, carrying out work-related tasks autonomously and/or in a supervisory capacity.

Communications - 6N1950

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the relevant knowledge, skill and competence to communicate verbally and nonverbally in a comprehensive range of everyday tasks and in work related tasks independently and/or in a supervisory capacity.

WORK PLACEMENT / EXPERIENCE:

Students will be required to undertake 60 Hours work experience at the Juice FM Cork on site radio broadcasting studio.

I would highly recommend the course as it offers hands on professional learning in a modern digital studio.
