Coaching & Physical Education 1

INTRODUCTION:

This practically orientated course is designed to provide students with a range of skills which will prepare them for a career in coaching, teaching, fitness and sports related fields. Students gain experience in a broad range of sports and fitness components. Students also have the opportunity to acquire coaching qualifications from the relevant coaching bodies.

Graduates from the course have been very successful in recent years in progressing to Higher Education, e.g. B.Ed in Sports Studies & Physical Education in UCC. Students gain excellent work experience in local primary and secondary schools in the area. Garda Vetting is required. Application numbers have been high in recent years, so it is advisable to bring a C.V. to the interview along with coaching experience details/references/current completed Garda Vetting proof. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Leaving Certificate or equivalent.
  • All applicants are interviewed, and places are awarded on suitability.
  • Experience in coaching is an advantage.

DURATION:

This is a one-year course and successful students can progress to Coaching & Physical Education 2.

COURSE CONTENT:

The following subjects may be offered:

Basketball Coaching - 5N4888

A practical based component on the skills of basketball coaching.

Communications - 5N0690

This subject aims to strengthen the oral and written communication skills needed in the workplace.

Exercise & Fitness - 5N2668

This subject provides students with a foundation in resistance training, circuit training and exercise to music.

Gaelic Football Coaching - 5N5085

Students learn the technical, tactical, and teamplay aspects of the game of Gaelic Football to enable the learner to assist in coaching Gaelic Football to children, youths and adults.

Shallow Pool Lifeguarding Skills - 5N18417

Depending on swimming ability, students may achieve the RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ). This is a worldwide-recognised lifesaving award, which is vital for students who see themselves travelling abroad in the future seeking employment during the summer months.

Nutrition - 5N2006

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the nutritional composition of food and the effects of food and nutrition on an individual’s health and personal well-being.

Soccer Coaching - 5N4887

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in technical, tactical, mental, physical, personal and lifestyle aspects of the game of soccer, to enable the learner to engage in planning and delivery of coaching sessions under appropriate supervision in the sport of soccer to participants between the ages of 6 and 12.

Sport & Recreation Studies - 5N2667

This theoretical subject looks at the history and issues in sports.

Sports Anatomy & Physiology - 5N4648

A theory-based component on the anatomy and physiology of the body with a sporting emphasis.

Work Experience - 5N1356

This provides students with experience in coaching in local schools.
