INTRODUCTION:

This course is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills and qualifications to pursue a career in the leisure industry. Graduates will have the skills and knowledge to deliver one to one training by conducting appropriate fitness assessments and designing safe and effective exercise programmes to the general public (adults 18yrs +) based on their individual needs, whether it be strength training, weight loss, training for an endurance event or general fitness. You can also work as a physical trainer with local groups, club sports teams and corporate fitness and wellness programmes or deliver your own fitness classes. All graduates are awarded the QQI Level 5 Award in Sport, Recreation & Exercise.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Leaving Certificate, L.C.A. or equivalent.
  • All applicants are interviewed, and places are awarded on suitability.

DURATION:

This is a one-year course.

* Note: Students with medical cards are exempt from paying the QQI exam fee.

CERTIFICATION:

  • QQI Level 5 in Sports, Recreation & Exercise (5M5146).

NCEF Certificate in Exercise and Health Fitness.

COURSE CONTENT:

The following subjects may be offered:

Sport and Exercise Injury Prevention - 5N5665

This equips students with the knowledge, skill and competencies in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of common injuries in sport and exercise working under supervision and direction.

Sport & Recreation Studies - 5N2667

This provides students with an overview and understanding of the sport, leisure and recreation industry.

Exercise & Fitness - 5N2668

This subject is designed to provide the student with the skills and knowledge to assist in the delivery of safe and appropriate exercise and fitness programmes.

Leisure Facility Administration - 5N4666

This will enable the student to work in an administrative capacity in a leisure facility.

Sports Anatomy & Physiology - 5N4648

This subject area provides the learner with an understanding of the working of the human body in sporting contexts.

Nutrition - 5N2006

The purpose of this unit is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the nutritional composition of food and the effects of food and nutrition on an individual’s health and personal well-being.

Shallow Water Pool Lifeguarding Skills - 5N18417

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to independently, effectively, efficiently and safely carry out lifeguard activities in a shallow water swimming pool with a depth of up to 1.5 metres in compliance with the current Irish Water Safety Swimming Pool Safety Guidelines, National Pool Lifeguard Manual and Rescue Skills Handbook published by the Irish Water Safety (IWS).

Customer Service - 5N0972

This equips the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to provide effective customer service within a work, social or voluntary environment, operating independently while under general supervision.

Work Experience - 5N1356

This subject provides the student with practical experience in a work environment.

Adapted Physical Activity - 5N4352

This module equips the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to plan, implement and evaluate, under appropriate supervision, a programme of coaching adapted physical activity to people with disabilities.

NCEF Certificate in Exercise and Health Fitness

This module qualifies you to supervise and instruct on the gym floor including the cardio, machine weights and free weight areas as well as teaching group exercise classes.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The college has a large well-equipped gymnasium/sports hall facility on site. There are facilities for resistance training, tennis, badminton, indoor hockey, indoor football, volleyball and basketball. It has several playing pitches and a floodlit, all-weather playing surface. It has access to a 25 metre swimming pool nearby. Students also use the lecture and computer facilities in the college. Courses are also delivered in the areas of Pool Plant Operations and Assistant Swim Teacher.
