Acting for Stage & Screen

INTRODUCTION:

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the performing arts. Learners gain first-hand experience in a wide range of disciplines, developing core skills that can help them advance to a more specialised performing arts training.

This immersive, hands-on performing arts course offers an opportunity to improve your performing, auditioning and technical production skills. Learn to work collaboratively with other creative individuals. Display your talents and discover your strengths. Clarify educational and career objectives.

Students discover acting for stage and screen. The business aspects of the performing arts industry are explored when students form a mini production company with classmates to stage shows both on and off campus. Throughout the course, students experience field trips, live concerts, plays and other professional performances. The course is taught by experienced industry professionals.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Leaving Certificate (LC Established, LCVP or LCA) or equivalent.
  • For mature applicants appropriate experience will be considered in lieu of formal qualifications
  • All applicants will be required to attend an interview

This is a one-year course.

CERTIFICATION:

  • QQI Level 5 in Certificate in Performing Arts (5M5151).

COURSE CONTENT:

Students will be examined in 8 subject areas. The following subjects may be offered:

Acting Skills & Techniques - 5N5055

As part of the Acting Skill and Techniques module students will gain valuable acting experience performing onstage in public peformances. Throughout the year students will be introduced to a comprehensive range of acting skills and techniques.

Theatre Performance Skills - 5N4568

The purpose of this component is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to develop effective skills for performance in theatre settings, including the required self-awareness and discipline.

TV & Film Acting - 5N6046

The purpose of this component is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to enable a practical understanding and appreciation of the role of professional acting in television and film.

Mime and Movement - 5N0559

The purpose of this component is to equip the learner with the equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to use acquired skills in the art of mime confidently and effectively in drama practice.

Event Production - 5N1374

The purpose of this component is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to organise and produce an event working independently and with others within a specific vocational context.

Theatre Studies - 5N4571

The purpose of this component is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to understand and perform a range of roles at introductory professional level within theatre companies.

Communications - 5N0690

The purpose of this component is to equip the learner with the relevant knowledge, skill and competence to communicate verbally and nonverbally in standard everyday tasks and in work-related tasks, operating independently while under general direction.

Work Experience - 5N1356

The purpose of this component is to equip the learner with the relevant knowledge, skill and competence to participate in the workplace for a limited time, carrying out work-related tasks independently while under general direction. This component will enable learners to prepare for a professional working life in the entertainment industry. Working with a producer and director, learners prepare and plan for a public performance in a professional venue. The experience enables learners to develop work skills.

EDUCATION PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES:

Graduates continue in diploma or degree performing arts programmes, such as musical theatre, drama and theatre studies. Some decide to pursue technical production or design, writing, teaching, etc. Others pursue professional work following graduation.
